Borneo Sea Gypsy

Duration: 4 hours
Departs: Morning

Fishing Village Drive north 50 minutes from Kota Kinabalu to Mengkabong, a fishing village situated in a mangrove estuary. The Bajau people, one of Sabah's indigenous groups, live in homes over the water. These clusters of houses on stilts are connected by plankwalks and rickety bridges and the main form of transportation within the village is canoe or small boat. The Bajaus, also referred to as Sea Gypsies, are fisherfolk and live a lifestyle quite unharried by modern civilisation.

The boat cruise along the seaward side of the village provides a closer look at their way of life.

Mangrove Forest

Cruise into the mangrove forest for a closeup view of the stilt-rooted mangrove vegetation that thrive in saline water, providing ideal breeding ground for many forms of marine life. This unique ecosystem is now protected in many parts of Malaysia.
